i. 簡介

本系列專為從 FileMaker Pro 轉入，或具備其他應用程式資料庫設計經驗的使用者所設計。在本系列中，凡提及「4D」皆指「4th Dimension」；凡提及「FMP」則指「FileMaker Pro」。

或許從 FMP 世界轉向 4D 時最大的挑戰在於：兩者在根本架構上截然不同。它們的基本設計哲學不同，術語也不同。筆者將透過說明 4D 與 FMP 之間的對應關係，協助讀者順利進入 4D 的世界。然而，部分概念因各自產品獨特性極高，難以甚至無法直接比對。

本文針對 FMP 的版本參考為 5.0.x，而 4D 則參考標準版（Standard Edition）4.6.x。

注意：目前 FMP 5.0 的建议零售價為 249 美元，4D 標準版則為 349 美元。 4D 與 FMP 均為跨平台軟體，可同時於 Macintosh 與 Windows 系統上運作，且皆具備網頁功能。

第一部分將簡述 FileMaker 與 4D 的發展歷程。值得一提的是，兩者皆起源於 Macintosh 平台，且時間相近（1980 年代中期）。
