4D Summit 2000

San Diego, California 4 -7 October 2000 The follow information and images are presented by Jeff Hopkins of HPO SOFT in Phoenix, Arizona EZ-8 Motel The $40/night EZ-8 Motel, just eight miles north of the Summit with easy access via the San Diego Trolley. Note how the motel is neatly snuggled beneath the freeways of San Diego.

Accoumentation were actual excellent for the price. The pictures are looking north and south. San Diego Trolley The San Diego Trolley system is most interesting. Two things stood out.

First, riding the trolley requires tickets. I purchased a 3 day unlimited pass for $10. That sounded very reasonable. While riding the trolley. I noticed that noone else seemed to be buying tickets.

Noone ever checked to see if anyone had a ticket. There is a sign saying you must have a ticket and if you don’t you may receive a citation. The second thing is there are two lines, the Orange Line and the Blue Line.

All trolleys are red, however. The first trip back late Wednesday night I got on an Orange Line by mistake. It was headed in the right direction, but I ended up in a Trolley parking lot wondering where everyone went (including the conductor).

Riding the trolley was actually quite enjoyable. I did notice that most of the people riding were not of the middle or upper-class of the region. The first photograph to the left is the Old Town Station, just a 5 minute walk from the EZ-8 Motel. The Grant Hotel The Grant Hotel is situated on Broadway in downtown San Diego.

Right across the street on Broadway is a Planet Hollywood. The interior of the Grant is nicely done with wonderful vases situated around the hotel. The photograph to the right below is of the Grant lobby.

The photographs below were the Information area for the 4D Summit. Several of us waited around early Wednesday morning for information on where to register. Noone ever showed up, but someone found the registration was on the second floor. The photograph to the left is the registration and to the right a table of iMacs all connected to the Internet.

There was also a table set up (long table) with ethernet wires for those with PowerBooks to connect. The conference appeared to be 99.99% Macintosh. What was really neat was the Apple Airport system.

Many people with iBooks could be seen sitting around the hotel logging onto the Internet wireless. One guy was carrying his iBook around in a use plastic grocery bag. A big contrast to my 50 pound PowerBook case (loaded with some books in addition the the G3 PowerBook).

Various organizations hosted some of the meals (breakfast and lunches). Blue World Communications was one of the hosts. 4D Summit People Brendan Coveney President, 4D, Inc.
